About the Position

Position: Civil Engineer
Location: Centurion
Reporting to: Deputy Chief of Party, Operations
Responsible to ensure the integrity of EQUIP's oversight of the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure in countries where EQUIP works with an emphasis on aligning the process with a) all country-relevant regulations and jurisdictions; b) all USAID requirements; c) all environmental impact considerations. Infrastructure includes clinics (stand-alone and within existing hospital campuses), laboratories, pharmacies, and offices. The position will be based in Johannesburg, South Africa, but will initially, exclusively, support activities in Malawi and Zambia.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • BEng/ BSc in Civil Engineering from a reputable institution
  • Professional registration with ECSA is non-negotiable
  • 8 + years' post graduate experience in the design of civil infrastructure (buildings, hospitals, clinics, etc.)
  • A minimum of 3 years civil engineering experience in resource-challenged settings including environments with challenges of access (ex. paved roads), water and electricity
  • Work experience for non-profit organisations/donor-funded preferred
  • Able to travel Internationally, mainly African countries, a minimum of 50% of the time

Key Performance Areas amongst others include:

  • Oversee the process of establishing in-country contracts with reputable construction firms;
  • Ensure the integrity and accuracy of all technical and feasibility studies and site investigations including, project costing prepared by the construction firms;
  • Approve detailed designs and project plans;
  • Assess and manage all potential risks of each project;
  • Through direct observation, ensure the integrity of the construction project including the selection and purchase of supplies (including accommodating for the scheduling of national and international shipments), the assignments of sub-awards (ex. construction specialist), and all activities at the construction site;
  • Ensure that all relevant requirements around issues such as building permits, environmental regulations, sanitary design, good manufacturing practices and safety on all work assignments are addressed;
  • Oversee the work of EQUIP in-country staff in relation to infrastructure;
  • Communicate and liaise effectively with colleagues and architects, subcontractors, contracting civil engineers, consultants, co-workers and clients;
  • Think both creatively and logically to resolve design and development problems;
  • Manage budgets and other project resources;
  • Resolve challenges that arrive during the construction projects including unexpected cost overruns;
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports for EQUIP leadership with an emphasis on management of risks;
  • Represent EQUIP at related meetings within the organization, Ministries of Health, USG government agencies, etc.
